How to Apply for a Learner's Licence (K53) in South Africa
The learner's licence is your first step to driving legally in South Africa. You need to pass a written test on rules of the road, road signs, and vehicle controls before you can apply for a driver's licence.
What you need before you start
- Certified copy of your ID
- Two black-and-white ID photos
- Proof of residence not older than 3 months
- Booking fee paid at the DLTC
Step-by-step process
- 1Book at a DLTC
Book in person at your nearest Driving Licence Testing Centre, or via the online booking system where available (e.g. Gauteng's NaTIS).
- 2Complete Form LL1
The learner's licence application form. Also complete a DL1 declaration.
- 3Eye test
A quick eye test is done at the DLTC to confirm you meet the visual requirements.
- 4Write the test
Multiple-choice test with three sections: road signs, rules of the road, and vehicle controls. You must pass all three.
- 5Collect your learner's licence
Issued on the same day (or the next day at some centres). It is valid for 24 months.
