A visitor's visa (or the 90-day visa-exempt entry many nationalities receive) can be extended inside South Africa through VFS Global — normally once, for up to a further 90 days — under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002. You must apply before your current stay expires.

Foreign nationals may only work in South Africa on a work visa issued under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002. The main routes are the Critical Skills Work Visa (for occupations on the critical skills list), the General Work Visa (employer-driven, with proof no suitable local was available), and Intra-Company Transfer visas for multinational staff.

A study visa lets a foreign national live in South Africa while enrolled at a registered school, college or university. It is issued by the Department of Home Affairs under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 and is valid for the length of the course.

The critical skills work visa is for foreign nationals whose occupation appears on the Critical Skills List published by the Minister of Home Affairs. It is issued under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 and, unlike a general work visa, does not require a labour market test by the employer.
