Critical Skills Work Visa

In plain English
The critical skills work visa is for foreign nationals whose occupation appears on the Critical Skills List published by the Minister of Home Affairs. It is issued under the Immigration Act 13 of 2002 and, unlike a general work visa, does not require a labour market test by the employer.

Who needs this permit

Foreign professionals in listed occupations — engineering, ICT, health, science, artisan trades, education and other categories on the current list — who want to work in South Africa.

When is it required

Before taking up employment. Apply from abroad at a South African mission, or in South Africa only if you are already in an eligible visa category.

Eligibility

  • Your occupation is on the current Critical Skills List
  • You hold the qualification and experience the list specifies for that occupation
  • You are registered with the relevant South African professional body or council, where one exists
  • You have a job offer or employment contract in that occupation

Documents you need before applying

  • Completed DHA application form (BI-1738) and passport valid for the required period
  • Proof of qualifications with SAQA evaluation
  • Confirmation of registration with the relevant professional body, council or board
  • Employment contract or offer of employment in the listed occupation
  • Proof of experience — reference letters confirming the required years
  • Police clearance certificates from every country lived in for 12 months or more since age 18
  • Medical and radiological reports
  • Proof of payment of the application fee

How to apply — step by step

  1. 1
Confirm your occupation is on the current list

The Critical Skills List is revised from time to time. Work from the version currently gazetted, not an older copy.

  2. 2
Get your qualification evaluated by SAQA

A SAQA certificate of evaluation is compulsory and takes time — start it first.

  3. 3
    Register with the professional body

Engineers register with ECSA, health professionals with HPCSA or SANC, and so on. Where the list names a body, registration is not optional.

  4. 4
Submit the application at a mission or VFS centre

Applications from outside South Africa go to the South African mission; in-country applications are submitted through VFS Global.

  5. 5
Track the outcome and endorse your passport

Once approved, collect the visa and check that the occupation and employer details are correct before you travel or start work.

Where, how much, how long

Where to apply
A South African embassy, high commission or consulate abroad, or a VFS Global centre in South Africa if you qualify to apply in-country.
Fees
A Home Affairs application fee plus VFS service fees, SAQA evaluation, professional body registration, police clearances and medicals. Confirm current amounts with DHA and VFS.
Processing time
Officially targeted in weeks, but in practice several months is common. Backlogs vary by mission.
Validity
Up to five years, depending on the occupation and the terms of approval.
Renewal
Apply for renewal well before expiry — at least 60 days is the standard requirement, and overstaying leads to being declared undesirable.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying under an occupation that is not on the current list
  • Missing the professional body registration where the list requires it
  • Police clearances that omit a country you lived in
  • Letting the visa lapse while a renewal is pending without proof of timely submission

Tips to speed up your application

  • Start SAQA evaluation and police clearances first — they set the timeline
  • Get reference letters on company letterhead stating exact dates and duties
  • Keep certified copies of everything you submit
