- Temporary Water Use Authorisation
Taking water from a river, borehole or dam, storing it, or discharging into a water resource is regulated by the National Water Act 36 of 1998. Short-term needs are covered by a General Authorisation or a temporary water use licence from the Department of Water and Sanitation.

Transporting, storing, treating or disposing of waste commercially in South Africa is regulated under the National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008. Listed waste activities need a waste management licence, while smaller operations register on the national or provincial waste information system.

An Atmospheric Emission Licence (AEL) is required for listed activities that release emissions into the air, under the National Environmental Management: Air Quality Act 39 of 2004. Licensing is done by the metropolitan or district municipality acting as the licensing authority.
