Any building work — new structure, addition, alteration, or a temporary structure like a marquee, container site office, event stage or show home — needs approval from your local municipality under the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act 103 of 1977 and SANS 10400. Small or short-term works usually qualify as a Minor Works or Temporary Structure application, which is faster and cheaper than a full plan submission.

A temporary occupation certificate is issued by your municipal Building Control Officer when a building is safe enough to occupy but final compliance sign-offs are still outstanding.
