How to Apply for a Special Vote in South Africa
A special vote lets you cast your ballot before ordinary election day if you cannot vote at your assigned station on the day itself. This plain-English guide explains who qualifies, how to apply, and what to expect.
Who can apply for a special vote?
You may apply if you are a registered voter and you cannot vote at your voting station on election day because:
- You will be away from your voting district for work, travel, or study
- You are pregnant or have a physical disability that makes travelling difficult
- You will be serving as an election official at a station other than your own
- You have another valid reason accepted by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC)
Special votes are not available to people who simply prefer to vote earlier. You must give the IEC a proper reason.
When and where to apply
Applications open during the special vote period announced before each election. The IEC usually publishes the dates on its website and in the media several weeks before election day.
You can apply:
- Online through the IEC website at elections.org.za
- In person at your local IEC office
- By SMS in some elections, using the number announced by the IEC
Apply as early as possible. Late applications are not accepted.
What documents you need
