Anyone whose licence card has expired, been lost, stolen or damaged, or who has renewed and is waiting for the new card to be printed.

When is it required

The moment your physical card is expired or missing and you still need to drive. Driving without any valid licence document can mean fines and insurance problems after a crash.

Eligibility

You hold (or held) a valid South African driving licence
You have passed the eye test at the DLTC or submitted an optometrist's certificate

How to apply — step by step

Book or visit the DLTC
Many centres now work on the eNaTIS online booking system — book ahead to avoid queues.

Do the eye test and apply for renewal
Complete form DL1, do the eye screening, pay the renewal fee and the temporary licence fee.

Receive the temporary licence immediately
The temporary licence is usually issued over the counter the same day. Keep it with your ID whenever you drive.

Collect your card when notified
Cards take a few weeks. If yours is not ready within about 6–8 weeks, follow up at the DLTC with your receipt.
