Municipal Permits

A filming permit is written permission to shoot film, video or photography for commercial purposes in a public place or on public land. In South Africa there is no single national film permit: you apply to the city film office (such as the Cape Town Film Permit Office or the Johannesburg Film Office), to the provincial nature conservation body for reserves, or to the landowner for private property.

A street closure permit temporarily closes a public street for a street party, market, race, procession, filming or construction. It is issued by the municipal roads or traffic department, usually together with an approved traffic accommodation plan.

Billboards, wall wraps, gantry signs and large outdoor advertising need municipal approval under the city's Outdoor Advertising and Signage By-law, plus structural sign-off. Provincial roads authorities and SANRAL must approve signs visible from their roads.

A temporary parking permit reserves on-street bays for a short period — for a wedding, film shoot, house move, skip or container drop-off, or short-term construction. It is issued by the municipal parking authority or roads department.
