A temporary authorisation lets someone use or possess a firearm they don't own — for a hunt, a shooting course, a competition or while a licence application is pending — within the limits of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.

Visitors bringing firearms into South Africa, and residents taking firearms out temporarily, need a temporary import or export permit from the SAPS Central Firearms Registry under the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000. The application form is the SAPS 520.
