How to Apply for the SASSA Child Support Grant
The Child Support Grant helps the primary caregiver of a child under 18 with basic needs. It is means-tested and paid monthly by SASSA.

Primary caregivers (usually the mother or grandmother) of children under 18 in South Africa, who meet the SASSA income test.

What you need before you start
- Bar-coded / Smart ID of the caregiver
- Child's birth certificate (unabridged preferred)
- Proof of income (payslips, bank statements, or affidavit if no income)
- Proof of residence
- If the caregiver is not a parent: a court order or affidavit explaining the arrangement
Step-by-step process
- 1Go to your nearest SASSA office
Applications are done in person at any SASSA local office. Find one at sassa.gov.za.
- 2Complete the application at the office
A SASSA officer will help you fill in the application and capture your fingerprints and photo.
- 3Provide supporting documents
You'll be given a receipt with a reference number. Keep it safe — you'll need it to follow up.
- 4Wait for approval
SASSA notifies you by SMS or letter. If approved, the grant is backdated to the date of application.
