How to claim, step by step

  1. 1

    Check eligibility and the deadline

You must have been a UIF contributor and be unemployed, available for work and registered as a work seeker. Retrenchment, dismissal and expiry of a contract can qualify. Voluntary resignation normally does not; constructive-dismissal cases need specific advice. Apply within 12 months of termination. UIF decides eligibility, not this checklist.

  2. 2

    Collect and check your documents

Ask your employer for UI-19 and check the reason and date of termination. Gather your identity documents, employment evidence and bank details. If an employer has not declared you or supplied a form, ask UIF for help rather than waiting until the deadline passes.

  3. 3

    Register as a work seeker

Register through ESSA or at a Labour Centre's Public Employment Services desk. This is separate from submitting a UIF benefit claim. Keep your details current and follow any work-seeking or reporting instructions.

  4. 4

    Apply through the official channel

Use the official UIF online service below, or take your documents to a Labour Centre. Choose unemployment benefits, check the employment and banking details, and submit all requested information. A saved draft is not a submitted application: keep the final confirmation and reference.

  5. 5

Follow up and request continued payments

Check your claim for queries and respond through the official service. After approval, follow the payment-request instructions and submit continuation information, including UI-6A where required. Report new work or income. Processing and payment times vary; no agent can guarantee approval or a payment date.

Deadline reference: Unemployment Insurance Amendment Act 10 of 2016 (official PDF), amending section 17. If you are late, ask UIF about condonation immediately; acceptance is not automatic.

uFiling: apply for unemployment benefits

Labour Centres: apply in person

Find your provincial office and local Labour Centre. Confirm hours and requirements before travelling; ask for help if you cannot register online or your employer's records are missing.

ESSA: work-seeker registration

Register as an individual work seeker with Employment Services of South Africa. This registration does not submit your UIF claim; you still need to apply for benefits separately.

Official UIF forms

Choose Unemployment Insurance Fund in the Department's forms directory. Look for UI-19 (employment), UI-2.1 (application), UI-2.8 (bank details) and UI-6A (continuation). Use the current form your claim channel requests.
