Small-scale and short-term mining — sand winning, brick clay, stone crushing, artisanal digging — requires a mining permit under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002, issued by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources for areas up to 5 hectares and operations of up to 2 years.

A prospecting right allows you to search for minerals on a defined piece of land. It is granted by the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy under the Mineral and Petroleum Resources Development Act 28 of 2002, and applications are lodged through the SAMRAD online system.

A controlled or prescribed burning permit gives you permission to burn firebreaks, veld or crop residue. Burning is regulated by the National Veld and Forest Fire Act 101 of 1998, your Fire Protection Association (FPA) rules and municipal fire by-laws.
